The weather took a turn during Trevor and John’s wedding on the central coast of California. But that didn’t stop them from having the most romantic celebration. In fact, the rain made it even more magical!
“Trevor and John envisioned an outdoor venue with a gorgeous view, and a curated food and drink menu that highlighted the best of the region,” shares photographer Kaitie Brainerd. “The Casitas Estate in the hills behind Arroyo Grande provided the perfect backdrop to showcase the beauty of the central coast’s wine country.”
To showcase their love of traveling the world, they DIY’d a world map seating chart and table numbers named after countries they visited, in addition to arranging their floral designs together to fit in with the wine country vibe. Additionally John even made his and Trevor’s three-tier wedding cake himself for the big occasion and Trevor built the ceremony arch that they stood in front of with their ceremony.
With all the details in place, it was time for them to unite under the sun and enjoy cocktail hour in the open air. The sweeping landscapes and plethora of greenery provided the simple yet elegant aesthetic they dreamed of.
It was all bright and dreamy, that is until Mother Nature decided to roll in some clouds.
“Everyone had just been seated for dinner and was enjoying salad when the raindrops started,” recalls the couple. “Statistically speaking, September is one of the driest months in California, meaning the chance of rain is incredibly low. What felt like just minutes later, the rain really started coming down. It soon became clear that the rain was there to stay.”
Instead of the wet weather detracting from the fun-filled day they had hoped for, Trevor and John along with their guests fully embraced the weather they were gifted.
“Initially guests all huddled underneath the awnings, but after the realization hit that the weather wasn’t going to let up, everyone decided to embrace it. “The DJ started playing music and they opened the bar. Most people joined in on the fun and danced in the rain with the newlyweds,” mentions Katie.
They say it’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, but rather dancing in the rain. Everyone truly took this to heart, which became the most memorable part of Trevor and John’s wedding day.
“Looking back, this was a great life lesson about enjoying whatever it is that life throws your way. We had spent so much time and effort planning every little detail and the rain truly threw us for a loop. We made the most of the situation and our guests are still telling us how much fun they had. It’s amusing how many people have told us that rain on your wedding day is good luck. But hey, maybe they’re right after all.”
