Rest Easy: Sleep Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

Brittny Drye Founder + Editor-in-Chief of Love Inc. Magazine | On-Air Wedding Expert | LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in the Wedding Industry

These slumber-inducing essentials and tips will help you get quality, stress-free ZZZs on the night of your wedding so you can wake refreshed and ready to say “I do.”

Creating a bedtime routine is crucial for training your body to calm down, so start a regular routine a few months before the big day, whether it’s a warm bath, yoga or calming music—whatever works for you. Refrain from caffeine after 2 p.m., and eat dinner 2-3 hours before bed to allow for proper digestion.

If you exercise in the evenings, be sure to give yourself plenty of cool-down time. A hard workout before bed can actually do the exact opposite of tiring you out. “The heavier the workout—and especially, the higher the heart rate becomes—the more likely you will suffer from sleep disruption,” says Carolyn Burke, sleep coach and editor of SleepAdvisor.org. “We want to calm the nerves and lower the heart rate, so gentle stretches, a light jog, or gentle yoga can all be beneficial.”

Keep the bed free of activity, even reading. “Reading in bed is not always such a good idea, as that trains your body to see your bed as a place for activity. We really recommend using the bed for nothing but sleep and sex.”

If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, refrain from looking at your phone. “The blue light from the device can disrupt your cycle,” says Burke, as well as spike any to-do lists concerns. Instead, if you find yourself unable to fall back to sleep, getting up and doing something such as light cleaning or reading can help relax you enough to get back to bed. “Remaining in bed for too long may be detrimental. We don’t want to train our bodies to see being awake in bed as routine.”
