Nico Tortorella and Bethany Meyers Share The Story of Their Nontraditional Wedding

A nontraditional wedding for a nontraditional relationship — that was the vision for Nico Tortorella and Bethany Meyers’ wedding day. Nico, who currently stars in TV Land’s comedy series “Younger,” and Bethany, who founded the be.come project, are a queer, polyamorous couple, and they wanted to share a wedding day that was reflective of them and their relationship. Instead of getting caught up in all that comes with a traditional wedding — guests, flowers, rings, etc. — they wanted to ensure they weren’t losing sight of the true reason for celebrating: their love. “This was our moment,” Bethany writes, “for us.”

In a poignant essay penned by the newlyweds for Condé Nast’s them, Nico and Bethany recounted the beauty of their nontraditional wedding day and the moments of their 12-year love story that led them to the City Clerk’s Office in lower Manhattan on March 9, 2018, to officially tie the knot. Fittingly, a man named Angel performed the ceremony for Nico and Bethany, who looked absolutely angelic dressed head to toe in white ethereal, gender fluid wedding attire designed by a close friend, Andrew Morrison. “The looks are everything we've ever dreamed of,” Nico writes. “Timeless, androgynous paraphernalia, mimicking romanesque sculpture that fluidly blends masculine and feminine. In this relationship we both wear the pants and the dress.”

The ceremony lasted only two minutes, but they continued the celebration of their union at St. Paul’s Chapel, the oldest church in Manhattan. “I had decided the night before that I wanted to head to a church in the city to read our vows,” Nico writes. “As much as this is a valued civil union, this is also a spiritually religious fusing that deserved an applicable house of worship.” After a tearful vow exchange, the newlyweds hopped in their pickup truck along with their dogs and headed upstate to kick off their marriage, where they spent their first weekend as a married couple reflecting on their journey and writing about their one-of-a-kind love story. “We became polyamorous without ever really trying, and we let each other go so often,” Bethany writes in the piece for them. “I guess we finally realized it’s the reason we’re impenetrable — it’s hard to break something that bends.”

Except for the color white, nearly every moment of their wedding day defied tradition, but that didn't take away from the authenticity of their unity. “As nontraditional as our day may be, I was surprised by the traditional emotions that swept over me that weekend,” Bethany writes. “The rush of excitement when the finishing touches were placed on our outfits, the tears that came during the vows, the anticipation I felt to see our wedding photos and send them to family and friends. I realized that no matter what type of wedding you may have, the rush of love will forever be present because that is the universal bond found in all sacred unity.”
