With LGBTQ+ rights on a constant attack from the current administration, last night's 67th Grammy Awards was a breath of fresh air in a room that was filled with love and respect for our community.
Rising star Doechii made history by winning the Best Rap Album award for her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, becoming only the third woman to receive this accolade since its inception 35 years ago. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Doechii emphasized her journey and dedication to sobriety, attributed her success to her faith, and thanked her support system, including her mother and fans. She highlighted that both solo female winners of this Grammy—herself and Cardi B—are Black, queer women, and encouraged Black girls and women to embrace their identity and believe in their potential to achieve greatness.
Chappell Roan, who was nominated for six awards including Record and Song of the Year, used her platform to honor the transgender community. On the red carpet, she expressed gratitude towards trans girls, stating, “I would not be here without trans girls.” She emphasized the perpetual existence and joy of trans people and credited her success to their influence.
Lady Gaga delivered a powerful message in support of transgender individuals during her acceptance speech for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. She stated, “Trans people are not invisible,” underscoring the importance of visibility and acceptance for the transgender community.
It was incredible to see celebrities use their platforms to speak out. But one element that was not spoken on was a very engagement-looking ring on a certain finger.
Cynthia Erivo (who looked absolutely breathtaking in a plunging Louis Vuitton dress) walked the red carpet sporting a sparkling diamond paired with a diamond infinity band, prompting rumors that the Wicked actress was engaged, or even married, to longtime partner Lena Waithe. Especially when she continued wearing it, even after an outfit change for her performance.
Though a source has said that it was merely a piece of jewelry loaned for the event, we have noticed that this isn't the first time she's worn a ring on that finger. And while we may never know for sure, as Erivo keeps her personal life extremely private, if the couple has made the marital leap, we're so thrilled for them!
