Knowing that they wanted to get married outside in February, John and Alex knew that their city of D.C. wasn't going to work, nor John's home state of Michigan. “So, instead we opted to do it in Alex’s home state of Florida,” they said. “We chose Key West because it’s a place that we’ve fallen in love with and has such a rich history in the LGBT community. Naturally, being the polo- and Sperry-wearing couple that we are, we knew that we wanted a preppy, nautical theme. We wanted modern, but elegant, so we want with the colors of navy and white, with yellow as an accent color.”
They worked with Just Save the Date event planning to bring their vision to life at Southernmost Beach Resort. Dressed in “Key West formal” — navy slacks and white button-downs from Bonobos — with nautical bow ties from The Tie Bar and (naturally) Sperrys shoes, they exchanged vows on the beach and then treated their guests to a tented celebration filled with merriment and maritime details, ending the night with a Key West classic: cupcake sushi.
