“I have never been one to believe in love at first sight but when I picked up the football while playing catch at the park and our eyes met, all I could think is ‘Wow she is beautiful’ and all I wanted to do is get to know her. At that moment I had this insane instinct that this girl was the one I would spend the rest of my life with,” says Preet reminiscing of that fateful day seven years ago on the Fourth of July when he laid eyes on Sharan for the first time.

Sharan also had an instinctual itch that led her to the park where they met. “I didn’t feel like going and told my parents I would not be attending the event. My parents took off to the park and after a couple hours of relaxing at home, I got this nagging feeling that I should be at the park spending the day with the family. While walking over to my family I noticed Preet and was immediately attracted to him. I knew at that moment that it was meant for me to see him that day.”

THE PROPOSAL
Following tradition, the couple dated for five years before having a taka done, the first step in Sikh pre-wedding ceremonies which means “to set the date.” “Due to Sharan’s busy schedule with medical school we decided the best date to set the engagement would be during her third or fourth year,” explains Preet of their relationship timeline. “We continued to date while Sharan finished her education.”
Finally, with graduation on the horizon, they circled November 9, 2013 on the calendar for their Kurmai and Chunni ceremonies which is the official engagement ceremony in Punjabi culture. Wanting to have photos to display at the ceremony, the happy couple booked Chantel Giongco to capture their love in photographic form.

As the couple smiled for the camera, Preet had secretly plotted to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and propose. “I knew I wanted to propose to her before the [engagement ceremony] date,” he says of his scheme. “While taking our photos at Empire Mine, I let her know throughout the photo shoot how special she is to me and she has truly made me the happiest man by being in my life.” He came across the picture-perfect location—a romantic fountain—and asked Sharan for her hand.

“I was not expecting the proposal at all. I was thrilled and overwhelmed with how perfect it was. The whole photo shoot was amazing because he was being romantic and telling me how much he loved me so I felt very loved that day,” Sharan exclaims.

The Ring
The engagement ring is a round-cut Tacori diamond with intertwined bands that Sharan fell in love with the moment she put it on. “He got down on bended knee and grabbed my right hand. After he asked me to marry him he attempted to put the ring on my right hand but it would not fit! He looked up at me so worried that it was not fitting and I began to laugh and told him it was the wrong hand!” laughs Sharan. “It was very cute and I will never forget that moment.”
