Best Wedding Cakes of 2018

Best of 2018: Wedding Cakes

The sweetest part of any wedding — after the emotional vows and first kiss, of course — is the dessert! Cake still reigns as the royalty of wedding desserts, the layers of delicious sponge smothered in frosting serving as a blank canvas for cake designers to wow couples and their guests. This year, we saw cakes with incredibly intricate designs woven into frosting, cakes topped with fresh fruit and lush florals and, in one of the boldest statements of the year, a cake suspended from the ceiling. Wedding cake is more than just the first sweet treat you share as a married couple and has become a key element of wedding design, and these nine wedding cakes that we featured throughout 2018 are perfect proof of that.

We can't decide which element of this award-winning cake from Michael and Sylvain's wedding we love more — the mountain motif etched into the frosting, the cascading golden croquembouche or the fact that it's suspended from a grand chandelier in the middle of the room. This is one cake that's just as spectacular as it was sweet! | cake design by Intricate Icings | photo by Frances Photography

Celestial details abound in this beach inspiration shoot, so a moon-inspired cake was a must. With a galaxy motif and textures that mimic the moon's craters, this cake is truly out of this world. | cake design by Sweet Miss V's | photo by Dewitt for Love

Jhonathan and Michael were drawn to a crisp white color palette, and their cake followed suit. We particularly love the texture of the sugar anemones on the towering square tiers. | cake design by Peridot Sweets | photo by Adam Trujillo

Betsy and Rachel's copper and navy color palette materialized in their epic wedding cake, too. We love the way the eye is immediately drawn to the metallic middle layer along with the unique design on the navy layer, and their cake table decor is just as cute! | cake design by Buttercream Bakeshop | photo by Lissa Ryan Photography

Macrame is a trendy decor piece for many boho weddings, but for this styled shoot, the cake designer took it a step further by incorporating a macrame design into the frosting, which absolutely blew us away! | cake design by Sugar Pot | photo by Translucent Photography

Before all the details of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding were officially unveiled, wedding pros in New York put on a styled shoot inspired by the royal wedding, which included this regal cake with white and gold layers that stunned with eight towering tiers. | cake design by Ron Ben-Israel Cakes | photo by Brett Matthews Photography
