Real Talk: The Groomsman-in-a-Dress Prank Is Anti-LGBTQ

There is an online trend that sparks viral videos of having your cisgender groomsman, wearing a dress, surprising the groom for the First Look. The groom turns around expecting his bride to be there, but, alas! It's his buddy in a wedding dress. Cue laughter. While it may be all in good fun, what people may not realize is that this so-called prank is extremely offensive.

The very punchline of this prank is a man wearing a dress … why is that a joke? What's funny about a man wearing a dress? Obviously, wearing a dress has nothing to do with gender, it's about your own personal style. But unfortunately, we very much live in a society that likes to pair specific fashion styles with specific genders, and those who may not walk that line according to society are often discriminated, or worse, for being themselves.

So when this prank is performed, it's making a laughing matter out of men wearing dresses, further propelling the idea that “it's wrong.”

Perhaps we can all agree that this is a trend that needs to fade … fast. And if you see it in your feed, say something. Take the opportunity to educate others. That's the only way we'll see change.
