I always wanted to be a fly on the wall when a state’s legislature passed a marriage equality bill. Do they erupt in cheers to reflect the excitement going on outside their doors or do they stay formal and solemn?

Lucky for us, Friday’s official vote in Hawaii’s House was captured on video as lawmakers cast “yea” or “nay,” documenting the important moment in history.

The video also shows the crowd celebrating outside afterwards, which in itself is indescribable. I was fortunate enough to be in New York City when the state passed marriage equality in 2011 and being surrounded by fellow equality cheerleaders, rainbow flags waving, and knowing that you were witnessing history was an evening that I will cherish forever.

See how Hawaii’s House and locals reacted in the video here.
