5 Takeaways from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Engagement

Taylor Swift is engaged.

*Cracks knuckles* Oh, I have been waiting my entire career for this.

If it wasn't obvious here and here … I'm an obnoxious-level Swiftie. So the news of her engagement to her boyfriend of two years Travis Kelce has me spinning (as if I wasn't already dizzy from having Swiftie Zoomies the entire month of August with the podcast, the album announcement, the countdowns … ). I'm obviously so happy for them, but I'm also very happy for myself seeing that my two obsessions — weddings and Taylor — can be fully combined for creating work-related content for at least a few months.

One of my pieces of advice for newly engaged couples is: take your time. Enjoy the engagement period before diving headfirst into wedding planning. So that's the advice I'm taking for my Swiftie-related content … while everyone is sharing their predictions about the wedding, let's talk about that proposal!

The At-Home Setting

It was done in their Kansas City home backyard, which I think couldn't be more perfect, especially for a girl who has already been everywhere and seen everything — it's one of the few places that she can truly be herself and feel safe. But, it wasn't done without thought, and Travis brought in thousands of dollars worth of florals to create a garden worthy of glitter gel pen writing. I love the idea of an at-home proposal, and it's certainly a proposal option that I've seen become more popular in the last five years.

He Asked For Scott Swift's Blessing

He also asked for Taylor's dad's blessing and, before you scoff, let me remind you that while yes, many wedding traditions are rooted in patriarchal systems, if you have your heart set on a tradition, then do it. Who cares? She literally sings “I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress,” in Love Story. So maybe it was a nod to that, maybe knowing how close she is to her parents, he wanted to formally confirm they were comfortable welcoming him into their family (after all, the stakes are obviously quite high) … regardless, the man is obviously in-tune with her wants and needs, and I have no doubt it's something that she appreciated.

Their Dads Gave Great Advice to Travis

Scott Swift and Ed Kelce gave the absolute best advice to Travis. On a podcast, Ed Kelce shared that Travis was nervous, and wanted to pick the “perfect” time to pop the question. According to Ed, he “kept wanting to have the perfect way to ask her to make it special and we [myself and Scott] kept telling him, ‘when you do it, that's what makes it special. So don't fret on where.'” This is so important to keep in mind. I remember when my partner and I were at the point in our relationship when I knew a proposal was coming. I had all of these ideas swimming in my head of an elaborate production. And instead, it happened on the back deck of a really shitty Airbnb we were staying in (mind you, it was while we were vacationing in Croatia, but there was absolutely nothing romantic about the deck with broken outdoor furniture we were sitting on when it happened). But you know what? Over a decade later, and it's still one of the most special moments of my life.

They Waited to Share the News

Again, according to Ed Kelce (thanks Papa Kelce for spilling all the tea!), they were engaged for about two weeks before sharing it on social. Even for us normies, that time in your life is going to be flooded with messages, DMs and comments congratulating you and it can be quite overwhelming. Take a cue from Taylor and Travis and bask in the news with your close circle first for a bit before blasting out to the world.

The Ring

Obviously, I will have an entire post dedicated to the Old Mine cut ring, but what I found particularly interesting is that, according to reports, he designed the ring in collaboration with Artifex Fine Jewelry, and it seems that he did it on his own, without her input. Given that many couples are going into the design process together, and she's incredibly intentional with her style choices, I find that super surprising. (But also, I kind of feel that she appreciates the romance of it all, so the surprise is fitting for them.) Regardless, he obviously nailed it. Good job, Trav.
