The bride's passion for architecture made the iconic venue of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater the perfect location to tie the knot.
Emma and Calvin crafted a wedding that celebrated their love authentically, a love story that started as far back as middle/high school.
“The first time I saw Cal, he was melting a plastic fork over a candle at a mutual friend's graduation party,” laughs Emma. “Actually, that's not quite true. The first time I saw Cal was at Pro Martial Arts in Berwyn, where we both did karate. I was in middle school, he was in high school, and quite frankly, I totally had a crush on him.”
“It was the summer of 2018. My gay youth group friends and I had been invited to a graduation party. I remember laughing hysterically while melting forks over tiny candles. Then a girl with short, blonde, dandelion-puff hair walked over, introduced herself as Emma, and asked what we were doing. I don't remember our conversation, but I know that she looked familiar to me. I thought she was cool — she was one of [our mutual friends'] cool, queer friends,” reflects Calvin of their reconnection. “And it's true, I do still have the melted utensils.”
“At this point, I realized that my crush never went away,” says Emma. “There was just this magnetic pull I felt towards Cal even before I realized who he was. I don't want to say I knew that we would end up together, but I think I did.”
The couple certainly infused their personality throughout the day, including Emma's love of architecture with their venue choice, the Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house.
To mirror the tranquility of their venue, their color palette, inspired by nature, featured blue hues, ivory pops, and green accents. The tones were seen throughout the elegant outdoor ceremony and inside the barn. It was there where greenery-filled vases and acrylic signs contributed to the naturalistic theme in addition to leafy green escort cards and a simplistic two-tier cake adorned with flowers.
Before the party began beneath the wooden beams of the barn, the two held a Quaker ceremony. Their photographer Alexa Frankovitch Photography recalled, “It began with about 20 minutes of complete silence to let everyone settle in and focus on the importance of the day. The two self-united and declared themselves married followed by a wedding certificate (similar to a Jewish ketubah) and an opportunity for anyone to stand and give a short speech or speak directly to the couple about their thoughts on the day and their marriage.”
Breaking away from traditional norms, Emma and Calvin also opted for a collective wedding party.
“[There was] not an even amount of ‘groomsmen' or ‘bridesmaids' on each side, just their closest friends standing next to them. This was extra important as some of their friends are nonbinary and they wanted the day as a whole to not fit into traditional wedding standards,” mentions the photographer.
Emma dazzled in a stunning Jenny Yoo wedding dress with Calvin sporting a blue suit in keeping with the aesthetic. The two really made the experience for guests one worth remembering; one that was also complete a fun popcorn bar, too!
When reflecting on the entire day, Alexa Frankovitch Photography exclaimed, “The day happened how it happened because of the people who came out for them. Who literally flew across oceans and who made staying in sketchy AirBnbs a fun experience. Who ate several slices of cake and cried all throughout the ceremony (this one was me). Emma and Cal are some of the warmest, most welcoming, joyful folks I have ever met and I am so honored to have been a part of this day.”
