Top Wedding Trend for 2026: Innovative Ways to Use Drapery as Decor

From elegant backdrops to draped tabletops, fabric accents are making a big statement.

As a wedding journalist, I’m constantly chatting with my industry friends about the latest trends. Recently, an industry expert, Pamela Wolter from The Resort at Pelican Hill, shared that, according to her, drapery is one of the biggest wedding decor trends of 2026.

I couldn’t agree more. If you speak to any top wedding planner or take a peek at their Instagram feeds right now, you’re sure to see plenty of billowing wedding drapery creating a dreamy, dramatic effect at a reception.

“Drapery is design poetry,” declares wedding planner Jove Meyer. “It transforms a space instantly, creating movement, softness, and emotion while elevating even the simplest room. When used with intention, fabric becomes architecture, art, and atmosphere all at once.”

If you would like to incorporate dramatic drapery at your wedding celebrations or would like to just look at some of the finest examples, read on.

Drapery Paired with Elegant Floral Arrangements to Craft a Timeless Ambiance

By pairing beautiful florals along soft swaths of fabric, the decor takes on a romantic, “secret garden” quality that feels both curated and whimsical at the same time.

“Combining drapery with floral arrangements creates a cohesive and unexpected visual experience. This blend can provide an organic design that is both memorable and photographs beautifully,” remarks Irene Katzias, wedding designer at Irene + Co Events.

Eye-catching Backdrop for the Sweetheart Table

The sweetheart table serves as the visual centerpiece of the wedding reception, and drapery ensures that the focus is always on the newlyweds.

“Drapery is increasingly being used as a versatile backdrop for event décor, adding depth and softness to a space. We’ve seen this beautifully executed as a sweetheart table backdrop, where layered fabrics created an elevated, textured look that felt both intentional and refined,” mentions Lorna Reyes, global sales manager of Casetta Hotels. “It’s a simple design element that instantly enhances the area while allowing other details to shine.”

Drapery That Tells the Couple’s Story

Personalization is key for 2026, and fabric offers a massive canvas to display a couple’s unique aesthetic or heritage. Experts advise using fabrics in specific colors or symbolic shapes to tell the couple’s story.

“To add personality to a big, white wall of a downtown loft space, we custom-cut colorful fabric panels and suspended them from a balcony above,” says Lindsay Landman, founder of Lindsay Landman Events. “The construction was reminiscent of the New York skyline, which was a motif that ran throughout the wedding, but the bright colors and sheer fabric added lightness and vibrancy to this summer wedding.”

Use Different Types of Fabrics to Craft Immersive Decor Elements

Mixing textures like velvet, silk, and organza creates a sensory experience that changes as the lighting shifts throughout the night.

“By layering muted, flowy fabrics with printed or textured panels and integrating them with structural elements, from entrances and lounges to photo-op walls and key ceremony areas, we’re able to define spaces, add depth, and enhance lighting and florals,” says Saanya Sharma, co-founder of Three Entertainment. “Thoughtful fabric choice, placement, and translucence turn drapery into an immersive design element that complements the overall wedding theme and mood, rather than just a décor add-on.”

Creating Spaces: Use Drapery as an Experiential Design Element

In 2026, large ballrooms are being broken down into intimate spaces using fabric dividers. This allows guests to discover new areas, like a hidden speakeasy or a quiet lounge, keeping the energy fresh.

“Couples are moving away from using drapery as simple background décor and are embracing it as an experiential design element. In larger spaces, it has the power to reshape scale, soften light, and influence emotion,” remarks Jessica Lange, senior catering sales manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey. “From fabric-lined corridors to intimate rooms-within-rooms, drapery offers endless ways to create an immersive wedding atmosphere.”

Draped Tablecloths for Understated Drama

Wedding experts are also embracing fabrics that “bunch up” on the table and floor for a sense of effortless decadence.

“Draped tablecloths are definitely in right now!” adds Zara Alina Aleksanyan of Zara Alina Photography. “They instantly transform a wedding from ‘event’ to ‘experience.’ They introduce movement, softness, and quiet luxury, especially when the dinner table is the focal point. Opt for natural fluid textiles like washed linen for an effortless European feel, cotton voile or airy movement, or silk/silk blend for a more formal look.”

These oversized textiles bring a residential, high-fashion feel to the dining room that encourages guests to settle in and linger. “Drapery has become a defining design language, particularly at the table,” adds Bryan Rafanelli of Rafanelli Events. “When tables are layered with pleated fabrics, trims, and thoughtful draping, they anchor the space emotionally, transforming the entire environment with softness, intention, and understated drama.”

Modern, Sculptural Fabric Installations Make a Statement

Traditional chandeliers are giving way to gravity-defying installations that act as hanging art pieces.

“We designed a fringe installation over the tables at the reception. The installation had the dramatic and intimate feeling we love about classic drapery, but it also added a more modern, sleek, and sculptural look,” notes Isabella Nyman, wedding planner and creative director at Isabellas Event. “The fringes allowed light to pass through, which added a third dimension to the design.”

Drapery to Elevate Outdoor Spaces and Spotlight the Architecture

Lastly, outdoor weddings benefit immensely from the movement fabric provides, catching the natural breeze to create a “living” decor element.

“Drapery can enhance the elegance of outdoor spaces like porches or patios that may otherwise feel mundane. By capturing light, outdoor drapery adds sophistication, frames special moments, and creates a dramatic effect,” says Jocelyn Hunter, owner at Twickenham House.

Moreover, fabrics that have been draped well enable couples to highlight the best features of their venue while softening any harsh or utilitarian lines. “Drapery works best when it’s used to enhance architecture, not compete with it. Focus on one or two intentional moments — like framing a ceremony space or softening a ceiling — to create movement and dimension,” concludes Anastasia Emerson, area social and events director of sales for Kennebunkport Resort Collection. “Paired with warm lighting, fabric instantly adds romance without feeling overdone, which aligns with a more elegant and timeless aesthetic.”
