Faux Glow: Tips for a Sunless Tan

Achieving sun-kissed skin, sans rays.

With today's modern options, you don't have to sacrifice your skin's health to unlock your inner golden god or goddess. Gone are the days of orange-hued, streaky fake tans—new formulations and innovative application techniques mean you can get a natural-looking glow through lotions, sprays and more.

Sunless tanning solutions contain DHA, which reacts with dead skin cells to temporarily darken the skin’s appearance, so no matter your skin tone, sunless tanners can give you a glow.

Spray Tanning: The Quick, Mess-Free Option

Pros: Of all the sunless tanning methods, spray tans offer the most even, streak-free results with relatively little effort. Salon spray tans provide the most foolproof application, as the technician can expertly spray the solution evenly over your entire body. Mobile spray tan services are also convenient for those who prefer more privacy.

Cons: Budget-wise, it is the pricier option around $50-$75 for a head-to-toe glow and doesn't have the convenience factor of coming in a bottle. It typically lasts one week (i.e., you may be halfway through your honeymoon when it starts to wear off!).

TANNING TIP: To get a flawless spray tan, arrive with clean, dry skin—don’t apply lotion, deodorant, or makeup beforehand. Wear dark, loose clothing you don’t mind getting stained. After your spray, wait at least eight hours before showering to allow full development.

Exfoliate thoroughly (and shave, if applicable) before any type of application to remove dry skin and moisturize daily to prolong it.

Tanning Lotions & Creams: When You Want Control

Pros: Available in light, medium and dark shades, creams allow you to gradually build color over several applications. Apply every other day until you reach your desired tan depth. Some lotions have also added skin care benefits like antioxidants and anti-aging formulas.

Cons: As with any DIY, it runs the risk of imperfection. Give yourself plenty of time for trial runs.

TANNING TIP: After exfoliating, use a tanning mitt to apply lotion for a smooth, flawless finish. Pay special attention to dry areas like elbows, knees and ankles which absorb more DHA and get your partner to help with the hard-to-reach areas.

If DIYing with lotions or wipes, wash hands immediately after to avoid orange palms!

Tanning Wipes & Drops: For In-Between Tans

Pros: Some areas of skin flake faster than others, so having travel-friendly wipes and drops conveniently on hand for quick fixes can help prolong your overall glow.

Cons: It's difficult to cover your full body with these products, nor are they as long-lasting, so they work best when paired with a more intensive formula, such as a spray and self-tanning lotion.

TANNING TIP: Wipe the towelette over your skin in large circles, blending until the color looks even. For the drops, add to your daily moisturizer for a color boost.
