Lance Bass and husband of 10 years Michael Turchin reflected on their wedding day in their latest sit-down interview with me for Love Inc.'s V10 print issue, and I've gotta say, these two were so ahead of their time.
Flashback to weddings in 2014/2015 — they were still pretty cookie-cutter. Boho, vintage chic and dessert bars were all the rage, and couples followed more what was on-trend vs. what personally spoke to them. But being a gay couple planning their wedding during a time when marriage equality was not yet the law of the land, Lance and Michael found themselves rewriting the rules. “When it comes to weddings, you grow up watching traditions (who walks down the aisle, who officiates), but we had to ask, ‘What traditions do we want to keep and what do we want to change,” Lance tells us in the interview.
Growing up in the South, tradition was still important to Lance, and so they incorporated Michael's Jewish heritage with a chuppah and hora. And while they kept some traditions, they certainly added their own spin to them. Instead of kids as flowers girls, they had their friends (a trend that is wildly popular today!) and instead of a rabbi or professional officiant, they had their two best friends officiate (which was practically unheard of back then!).
“He wanted our flower girls — literal Sports Illustrated supermodels — to wear dresses made of actual flowers that they could pluck and toss as they walked. I had to reel him in on that one,” laughs Michael. (Not gonna lie, that sounds kind of awesome to me!) They also included their beloved pups in the ceremony.
“The gay community has always been the trendsetters,” says Lance. “We're the artists.”
