Saville Dam in Barkhamsted, Conn., is a gorgeous locale for a photo session, but Adam and Rob were the true center of this charming shoot. The D.C. locals met with the talented Antonio Rocha to announce their engagement to the world. The dam, a polar opposite of the bustling metropolis they call home, is quaint, full of trees and the perfect setting for this down-to-earth couple.
The Love Story
Adam and Rob met each other in 2008 at a local bar and have been together ever since, dating for six years before Adam popped the question. The couple tells us that their first date was at Thai Chef in Dupont Circle, a popular D.C. foodie neighborhood. Rob says of their first date that although he was initially apprehensive, things changed on a movie date early in the relationship. The movie in question, “Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day,” made Rob see that Adam was “cute and sappy. That’s when I knew that I really liked him and I wanted to continue to see him.”
Adam knew that Rob was the one around the time Rob began to really get to know Adam’s family. “He fit right in and was able to hold his own against my family. He is kind and considerate and accepts me, quirks and all,” explains Adam.
The Proposal
Adam’s first comment about the proposal? “It was like herding a cat!” All jokes aside, a month earlier, Adam asked Rob’s mother for her permission to marry her son. On the day of the proposal, it was a gorgeous winter day with blue skies and sunshine … a break from the cold snap D.C. had been suffering. Adam took Rob out to brunch with a few of their friends whom they hadn’t seen in a while, which made it all the more special.
The couple then took a walk to Georgetown to get macarons and coffee and sit out on the Potomac—”Rob loves all things French,” adds Adam. They walked down to the bank of the river, one of the most scenic locations in all of Washington, and that’s when the magic happened.
Rob says, “We sat down by the water to see the kids feeding the ducks and that's where Adam launches into a bit of a prepared talk, reaching into his pocket and producing a black box with a ring inside. I was keenly aware of everyone watching and was beet red from a mixture of embarrassment and over-brimming happiness.”
From there, they strolled around the park a little bit longer, basking in the glow of their new engagement. The couple plans to get married at Adam’s family’s day camp in Connecticut on National Coming Out Day this year.
