When it comes to picking your honeymoon destination, love should feel safe everywhere. But the reality is that laws, protections, and even social attitudes toward LGBTQ+ couples vary dramatically across the U.S.
To help couples make informed travel choices, we created the Love Inc. LGBTQ+ Honeymoon Safety Index: a state-by-state scoring system that evaluates both legal protections and real-world experiences for LGBTQ+ travelers.
Evaluation Criteria
Each state (and D.C.) was evaluated across six key categories, or “pillars,” that together reflect how safe, welcoming, and affirming it is for LGBTQ+ honeymooners:
Legal Protections
We looked at whether a state legally protects LGBTQ+ people in areas like employment, housing, and public accommodations — as well as whether it bans conversion therapy, recognizes same-sex parents, and allows accurate gender markers on IDs. In short: Does the law protect you from discrimination and affirm your relationship?
Legal Harms or Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws
We then reversed the lens and measured the impact of any laws that restrict LGBTQ+ rights — such as bans on gender-affirming care, “Don’t Say Gay” education restrictions, or laws limiting trans people’s access to IDs, bathrooms, or sports. In short: Is the state government working for — or against — equality?
Violence & Reporting
Using FBI hate-crime data, we examined how frequently anti-LGBTQ+ incidents occur — and how well states actually report them. States with better data and lower bias-crime rates scored higher. In short: How safe are LGBTQ+ people from hate-motivated violence?
Community Climate
Beyond laws, culture matters. We looked at public opinion polling on LGBTQ+ acceptance, the presence of Pride events and community centers, and city-level inclusivity scores (like HRC’s Municipal Equality Index). In short: How welcoming does the state feel in everyday life?
Tourism & Hospitality Readiness
We evaluated how openly hotels, resorts, and wedding vendors embrace LGBTQ+ travelers — including whether the state’s tourism board promotes inclusivity and how easy it is to find queer-affirming businesses. In short: Will you feel celebrated — or just tolerated — while traveling here?
Practical Care Access
This reflects how easily couples can access affirming healthcare or emergency support while traveling — from hospitals and clinics to local LGBTQ+ hotlines or resource centers. In short: If something goes wrong, can you get help without fear or bias?
We then applied small modifiers (±5 points max) for specific travel realities — like how metro areas might offer extra safety in otherwise conservative states, or if a state has an active travel advisory for LGBTQ+ visitors.
Finally, we translated each score into easy-to-read Safety Ratings:

We used the most recent public and verified data available, including:

- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) — hate-crime and reporting data
- Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and Pew Research Center — public acceptance polls
- State and local tourism boards and healthcare directories — to measure inclusivity and access
We also factored in real-world travel conditions based on local ordinances, advocacy reports, and available LGBTQ+ community resources.
