LGBTQ+ Honeymoon Safety Index

When it comes to picking your honeymoon destination, love should feel safe everywhere. But the reality is that laws, protections, and even social attitudes toward LGBTQ+ couples vary dramatically across the U.S.

To help couples make informed travel choices, we created the Love Inc. LGBTQ+ Honeymoon Safety Index: a state-by-state scoring system that evaluates both legal protections and real-world experiences for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Evaluation Criteria

Each state (and D.C.) was evaluated across six key categories, or “pillars,” that together reflect how safe, welcoming, and affirming it is for LGBTQ+ honeymooners:

Legal Protections

We looked at whether a state legally protects LGBTQ+ people in areas like employment, housing, and public accommodations — as well as whether it bans conversion therapy, recognizes same-sex parents, and allows accurate gender markers on IDs. In short: Does the law protect you from discrimination and affirm your relationship?

Legal Harms or Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws

We then reversed the lens and measured the impact of any laws that restrict LGBTQ+ rights — such as bans on gender-affirming care, “Don’t Say Gay” education restrictions, or laws limiting trans people’s access to IDs, bathrooms, or sports. In short: Is the state government working for — or against — equality?

Violence & Reporting

Using FBI hate-crime data, we examined how frequently anti-LGBTQ+ incidents occur — and how well states actually report them. States with better data and lower bias-crime rates scored higher. In short: How safe are LGBTQ+ people from hate-motivated violence?

Community Climate

Beyond laws, culture matters. We looked at public opinion polling on LGBTQ+ acceptance, the presence of Pride events and community centers, and city-level inclusivity scores (like HRC’s Municipal Equality Index). In short: How welcoming does the state feel in everyday life?

Tourism & Hospitality Readiness

We evaluated how openly hotels, resorts, and wedding vendors embrace LGBTQ+ travelers — including whether the state’s tourism board promotes inclusivity and how easy it is to find queer-affirming businesses. In short: Will you feel celebrated — or just tolerated — while traveling here?

Practical Care Access

This reflects how easily couples can access affirming healthcare or emergency support while traveling — from hospitals and clinics to local LGBTQ+ hotlines or resource centers. In short: If something goes wrong, can you get help without fear or bias?

We then applied small modifiers (±5 points max) for specific travel realities — like how metro areas might offer extra safety in otherwise conservative states, or if a state has an active travel advisory for LGBTQ+ visitors.

Finally, we translated each score into easy-to-read Safety Ratings:

Score RangeRatingMeaning
90–100🌈🌈🌈🌈 ExcellentStrong protections, inclusive culture, affirming everywhere you go.
75–89🌈🌈🌈 GoodGenerally safe, but check local conditions or stick to metros.
60–74🌈🌈 CautionMixed environment; metro travel advised, rural caution recommended.
<60🌈 Elevated RiskWeak protections or active hostility — travel only with caution.

Where the Data Came From

We used the most recent public and verified data available, including:

  • Movement Advancement Project (MAP) — tracking LGBTQ+ laws and protections
  • Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — State Equality Index & Municipal Equality Index
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) — hate-crime and reporting data
  • Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and Pew Research Center — public acceptance polls
  • State and local tourism boards and healthcare directories — to measure inclusivity and access

We also factored in real-world travel conditions based on local ordinances, advocacy reports, and available LGBTQ+ community resources.

Why It Matters

This index isn’t meant to discourage travel … it’s meant to empower LGBTQ+ couples to celebrate their love safely and authentically. Even in conservative states, there are affirming cities, small businesses, and wedding professionals creating safe spaces every day. Our goal is to help you find them and travel with peace of mind.

STATE-BY-STATE RANKING

Alabama: 31/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Alabama ranks near the bottom of the index, reflecting limited legal protections, multiple anti-LGBTQ statutes, and low statewide visibility of affirming spaces. While metropolitan areas like Birmingham and Huntsville are seeing progress through local Pride events and supportive small businesses, statewide policies remain restrictive.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: keep plans centered in larger cities with active queer communities and avoid assumptions of inclusion in rural areas. For couples seeking a southern honeymoon, neighboring states like Georgia’s Atlanta metro or coastal Florida metros may provide more affirming options while retaining the same regional vibe.

Alaska: 70/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution (Upper Range)

Alaska is breathtakingly beautiful and generally tolerant, with progressive enclaves in Anchorage and Juneau balancing its otherwise conservative political leanings. While there are few overtly anti-LGBTQ laws, statewide protections are incomplete and affirming services can be sparse outside urban centers. For many couples, the safety challenge is less about hostility and more about remoteness and access.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know:
Anchorage is welcoming and inclusive, offering affirming hotels and a growing Pride scene. For wilderness honeymoons, plan logistics carefully … remote areas have limited resources and few queer-specific protections, so pre-vetting accommodations and medical options is key for peace of mind while exploring the Last Frontier.

Arizona: 61/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution

Arizona’s mix of natural beauty and queer-friendly cities makes it an appealing yet complex honeymoon destination. Phoenix, Tucson, and Sedona boast vibrant Pride scenes, inclusive vendors, and nationally recognized affirming resorts, while state-level laws lag behind its progressive urban culture.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know:
Urban hubs like Phoenix, Tucson, and Sedona offer plenty of affirming spaces and stunning desert romance, but couples should stay aware that outside these metros, social conservatism and uneven protections persist. Stick to vetted venues and city-based itineraries for the smoothest experience under the Sonoran sun.

Arkansas: 41/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Arkansas offers pockets of inclusivity amid a challenging statewide environment. Cities like Little Rock and Fayetteville have vibrant LGBTQ+ communities and inclusive vendors, while historic Eureka Springs—known as the “gay capital of the Ozarks”—remains a beloved destination for queer weddings and honeymoons. However, the state’s aggressive anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and lack of legal protections make it one of the riskier honeymoon destinations overall.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stay centered around inclusive hubs like Little Rock or Eureka Springs, where the community is vocal, visible, and welcoming. Avoid rural areas that may not reflect the same acceptance, and rely on vetted LGBTQ+-friendly venues to ensure your celebration feels safe and affirming.

California: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

California remains one of the most affirming places in the world for LGBTQ+ couples. It pairs comprehensive statewide legal protections with exceptional urban equality climates and full-spectrum healthcare inclusion. While the absolute number of hate crimes is higher than in smaller states, that’s largely a reflection of stronger reporting and transparency, not elevated risk.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: California earns 93 / 100 (Excellent) — combining world-class inclusivity, visible queer culture, and robust systems that keep travelers safe and seen.

Colorado: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Colorado is a model of inclusive progress—a state where equality is written into law and woven into daily life. LGBTQ+ honeymooners will find breathtaking natural beauty paired with some of the strongest protections and most affirming hospitality in the country. From the Rockies to Denver’s artsy neighborhoods, inclusivity feels effortless and authentic.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: while the major metros and resort towns (Denver, Boulder, Aspen, Vail) are proudly queer-friendly, rural mountain communities can be more reserved. That said, the state’s legal protections extend statewide, so couples can explore confidently knowing Colorado consistently champions LGBTQ+ rights.

Connecticut: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Connecticut remains a model of equality and inclusion in the Northeast. It was one of the first states to legalize same-sex marriage and continues to lead with strong protections, inclusive healthcare, and visible community engagement. Couples will find a perfect blend of coastal charm, historic towns, and refined hospitality—all within a deeply affirming legal and social environment.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: the entire state is affirming, but standout honeymoon spots include coastal Mystic for romantic getaways, Litchfield Hills for countryside elegance, and New Haven for culture and cuisine. You can travel anywhere in Connecticut with complete peace of mind — equality here isn’t just policy, it’s culture.

Delaware: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Delaware is one of the smallest states with one of the biggest hearts for LGBTQ+ inclusion. It offers full protections under state law, visible Pride celebrations, and a vibrant, year-round queer-friendly coastal scene. Rehoboth Beach in particular stands out as an iconic East Coast LGBTQ+ haven, beloved for its mix of charm, safety, and seaside elegance.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Rehoboth Beach is the heart of Delaware’s queer community and an ideal honeymoon destination — think sunset boardwalk strolls, boutique stays, and inclusive nightlife. Wilmington and Dover offer urban and historical charm, and the entire state upholds strong equality protections, making Delaware a reliably safe and welcoming choice for couples.

Florida: 47/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Florida presents a split profile: vibrant, inclusive cities and hospitality sectors (Orlando, Tampa, Miami = perfect MEI scores) but offset by an aggressively anti-LGBTQ legal climate and limited reporting transparency. Hate-crime rates appear moderate, yet coverage gaps suggest under-reporting.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to metro bubbles, vet vendors carefully, and be aware of ongoing travel advisories.

Georgia: 56/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (borderline “Caution”)

Georgia’s story is one of contrasts. Atlanta and Savannah stand among the most welcoming LGBTQ+ cities in the South, boasting 100-point MEI scores, inclusive vendors, and vibrant Pride celebrations. Yet the absence of statewide protections and recurring anti-LGBTQ+ legislation drag down its overall safety rating.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to inclusive metro hubs like Atlanta or Savannah, where equality is visible and community strong. Venturing into rural or conservative regions can still be rewarding for nature and charm, but couples should plan stays with vetted, affirming accommodations and vendors to ensure a stress-free getaway.

Hawaii: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Hawaii consistently ranks among the safest and most affirming U.S. destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. It boasts comprehensive legal protections, nearly full reporting coverage, minimal hate-crime incidence, and an exceptionally welcoming tourism sector. Local Pride organizations, inclusive healthcare systems, and high public support levels reinforce its reputation as a model state for LGBTQ+ safety and hospitality.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Hawaii scores 94/100 — one of the highest nationwide, reflecting its blend of robust legal equality and genuine aloha inclusivity.

Idaho: 41/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Idaho’s mountain vistas, lakes, and outdoor adventures make it visually stunning but legally precarious for LGBTQ+ honeymooners. Boise stands out as a supportive and growing queer community hub, yet statewide politics remain deeply conservative, with a flurry of anti-LGBTQ+ bills and limited protections. Visibility is improving, but institutional safeguards lag far behind.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Boise offers a warm welcome with inclusive restaurants, Pride events, and affirming vendors. Outside the capital, attitudes and laws become markedly less accepting. Couples seeking outdoor romance should stay close to major metros or vetted venues, and remain aware of the state’s restrictive climate when planning celebrations.

Illinois: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Illinois is a leader in LGBTQ+ equality, offering comprehensive legal protections and a deeply welcoming culture anchored by Chicago’s vibrant queer scene. The state balances progressive laws with strong on-the-ground visibility—from Pride festivals to inclusive healthcare access—and has become a Midwest magnet for LGBTQ+ weddings and honeymoons alike.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: you’ll find top-tier inclusivity and plenty of celebration in Chicago and surrounding metros, but smaller rural towns can be quieter in their representation. Still, legal protections extend statewide, giving couples the freedom to explore everything from lakeside getaways to romantic countryside retreats with confidence.

Indiana: 41/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Indiana offers a mix of welcoming urban spaces and significant statewide legal and policy gaps. Some cities are affirming and safe, but the lack of full statewide protections (especially regarding gender identity and transgender-related rights), along with recent restrictive laws, make the overall environment riskier than many other states.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you choose Indiana, focus your plan around major inclusive hubs (e.g., Indianapolis) where vendors and hospitality may be more affirming. Avoid assuming statewide inclusivity—outside metro areas you may encounter few protections and less visible LGBTQ+ support. Due diligence on vendors and accommodations is especially important.

Iowa: 69/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution (Upper Range)

Iowa was an early leader in LGBTQ+ rights — one of the first Midwestern states to legalize same-sex marriage — but has since taken a conservative legislative turn, especially regarding trans youth. Still, its social climate remains largely respectful, and its cities offer vibrant, affirming communities.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Des Moines and Iowa City are your best bets for inclusive hospitality, creative wedding venues, and affirming care access. The rest of the state is polite but reserved; stay within metro or college-town bubbles for the smoothest and most welcoming honeymoon experience.

Kansas: 42/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Kansas offers some welcoming urban pockets and growing public support for LGBTQ+ rights, but its statewide legal protections remain weak and there has been recent legislative action that restricts trans identity documentation, care, and participation in public life. For honeymooners, this means there’s a meaningful risk outside carefully chosen venues and metro hubs.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: focus your plans on inclusive cities (e.g., Wichita, Kansas City metro area, Lawrence) and selected venues that are explicitly LGBTQ-friendly. Avoid assuming protections are consistent across the state—outside urban cores you may find fewer resources, fewer protections, and a more uncertain social environment. Vet hotels, vendors, and especially any activities or locales you're heading to.

Kentucky: 43/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Kentucky presents a challenging environment for LGBTQ+ honeymooners. While there are welcoming pockets — particularly in cities like Louisville and Lexington, where local ordinances and community organizations support queer couples — statewide protections are weak or absent, especially for gender identity and public accommodations. Recent legislation restricting education, trans youth access, and other rights further complicates the landscape.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: If you choose Kentucky, concentrate your itinerary in more progressive metro areas (Louisville, Lexington), rely on explicitly queer-friendly venues and vendors, and avoid assuming statewide support or protections. Rural regions and smaller towns may require extra caution and preparation.

Louisiana: 55/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Caution / Elevated Risk

Louisiana is a story of contrasts: New Orleans is one of the most joyful and welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations in America, while statewide protections remain limited and unevenly enforced. Strong community networks, visible Pride celebrations, and world-class hospitality lift its score, but weak legal frameworks and rural disparities temper the overall safety rating.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know:
Stick to affirming metros like New Orleans or Baton Rouge for the best experience: vibrant nightlife, historic architecture, and openly queer-friendly hotels make them irresistible. Outside these hubs, acceptance can be more subdued, so it’s best to vet vendors and accommodations before booking.

Maine: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Maine embodies the perfect blend of coastal charm, small-town hospitality, and progressive values. It offers full LGBTQ+ protections, a visible and proud queer community, and an ethos of inclusion that extends from Portland’s bustling arts scene to Bar Harbor’s quiet coastal romance.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Portland and Ogunquit are iconic for LGBTQ+ travelers, while Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park offer breathtaking honeymoon backdrops. Couples can explore confidently anywhere in the state—Maine’s welcoming, laid-back culture and strong equality laws make it one of New England’s most affirming destinations.

Massachusetts: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Massachusetts is the gold standard for LGBTQ+ equality and romance. As the first U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage, it paved the way for national change — and still leads in inclusive policies, healthcare access, and cultural representation. Whether celebrating in Provincetown’s iconic queer haven, enjoying vineyard sunsets, or exploring Boston’s historic sophistication, couples can expect complete affirmation and safety.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: you can travel anywhere in Massachusetts with confidence. Provincetown and the Islands offer playful, coastal celebration energy; Boston and Cambridge bring urban culture and elegance; and the Berkshires provide serene, artistic countryside escapes. Every part of the state welcomes love, loudly and proudly.

Maryland: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Maryland has built one of the strongest LGBTQ+ equality frameworks in the U.S., combining inclusive laws with vibrant community visibility. From the artsy energy of Baltimore to the romantic serenity of the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay, the state offers both safety and style for newlyweds. With top-tier affirming healthcare, visible Pride events, and a welcoming culture, it’s an easy and confident “yes” for LGBTQ+ honeymooners.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Baltimore is a creative, queer-friendly hub perfect for city lovers, while Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay deliver quiet coastal luxury. You’ll find affirming venues and vendors statewide. Maryland’s balance of culture, care, and coastline makes it one of the East Coast’s safest and most romantic options.

Michigan: 84/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈 Good

Michigan has made major strides in legal equality, especially with the recent codification of sexual-orientation and gender-identity protections under ELCRA, and has metropolitan hubs with vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and affirming hospitality. While the state may not have the uniformly top-tier score of the very most inclusive destinations, it offers a very solid and reliable environment for LGBTQ+ honeymooners—especially if your itinerary stays in or near the major cities and well-reviewed vendors.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and the lakes-region resorts offer strong inclusive options and affirming vendors and venues. If you’re planning more rural or remote adventures (e.g., Upper Peninsula, small towns), check local hotel/resort reviews for LGBTQ+ friendliness and make sure all aspects of your stay (accommodations, vendors, healthcare access) align with your comfort and safety expectations.

Minnesota: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Minnesota is a beacon of equality in the Midwest. With comprehensive protections, a welcoming culture, and world-class care access, it’s one of the safest and happiest destinations for LGBTQ+ honeymooners. The Twin Cities offer vibrant arts, food, and Pride scenes, while northern regions like Duluth and the North Shore blend breathtaking scenery with affirming small-town hospitality.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: you can honeymoon anywhere in Minnesota with confidence. Minneapolis–St. Paul shines for urban chic and culture, while Lake Superior, Stillwater, and the Boundary Waters offer cozy romance surrounded by nature. The state’s progressive spirit and genuine kindness make it a Midwest standout.

Mississippi: 38/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Mississippi remains one of the most legally restrictive states for LGBTQ+ individuals, with minimal statewide protections and multiple laws that explicitly allow discrimination under “religious freedom” exemptions. However, cities like Jackson and coastal Gulfport have strong local advocacy networks, affirming churches, and inclusive hospitality that keep a spark of progress alive.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if visiting Mississippi, center your stay in Jackson or the Gulf Coast, where inclusive businesses and Pride organizers create safer spaces. While rural and religious areas are less affirming, local activists are building community through art, food, and faith—proof that love persists even where equality lags behind.

Missouri: 65/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution

Missouri’s major cities are progressive and welcoming, with active Pride organizations, queer-owned venues, and inclusive hospitality scenes. However, the state’s broader legal landscape remains hostile, with multiple anti-trans laws and limited statewide protections. Honeymooners will find affirming experiences in Kansas City, St. Louis, and Columbia, but should be cautious when traveling through rural regions or engaging with state-level institutions.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to the urban corridor: Kansas City for arts and nightlife, St. Louis for historic romance and fine dining, Columbia for college-town charm. Outside these hubs, inclusive infrastructure thins quickly, so confirm venues and healthcare options in advance.

Montana: 43/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Montana’s mountains and wide-open beauty make it a dream setting for adventurous couples, but the state’s legal and political climate has become increasingly restrictive for LGBTQ+ residents. Urban enclaves like Missoula and Bozeman remain warm and welcoming, anchored by inclusive universities and vibrant Pride events, yet state-level legislation and conservative rural culture keep risk higher than in most Western states. What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you stick to progressive hubs like Missoula or Bozeman, you’ll find affirming lodges, creative wedding vendors, and breathtaking scenery. Rural regions, however, can be less open, so plan ahead with trusted venues and inclusive accommodations before heading into Big Sky Country.

Nebraska: 36/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Nebraska offers some local affirmative spaces—especially in Omaha, Lincoln and other urban hubs—but the statewide legal and policy environment remains weak for LGBTQ+ people, especially for gender identity issues. The absence of consistent nondiscrimination laws, recent anti-trans legislation (e.g., minors’ care bans), and limited statewide visibility mean that for honeymooners, the experience will vary a lot depending on location and vendor choice.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you’re planning a honeymoon in Nebraska, centre your itinerary in one of the more inclusive metro areas (like Omaha or Lincoln) where there are affirming venues and services. Outside those hubs, protections drop off and fewer resources or visible supportive options may exist. For a worry-free experience, carefully vet hotels, vendors, and local healthcare options in advance.

Nevada: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Nevada blends bold celebration and genuine inclusion, making it one of the most LGBTQ-friendly honeymoon destinations in the world. With marriage equality enshrined in its constitution, a robust nondiscrimination framework, and an unrivaled hospitality industry, the state has fully embraced love in all forms. From Las Vegas elopements to Lake Tahoe getaways, inclusivity here isn’t performative—it’s policy.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Las Vegas and Reno are proudly affirming, with wedding chapels, hotels, and entertainment venues that actively welcome LGBTQ+ couples. Rural Nevada is quieter but generally tolerant; statewide protections ensure couples can travel confidently no matter where their adventure leads.

New Hampshire: 91/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

New Hampshire provides an ideal mix of safety, natural beauty, and understated charm for LGBTQ+ honeymooners. Full legal protections are in place, Pride visibility is expanding each year, and inclusive tourism—especially around Portsmouth, the Lakes Region, and the White Mountains—makes it an easy, relaxed choice.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: the state’s “Live Free or Die” spirit translates into broad social tolerance and respect. While smaller towns may feel less visibly queer than in neighboring Maine or Massachusetts, the culture is open and affirming throughout. Portsmouth, the White Mountains, and Lake Winnipesaukee are standout honeymoon spots for couples seeking cozy New England romance.

New Jersey: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

New Jersey is one of the most inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly states in the nation. It offers full legal protections, progressive policies, and a deeply welcoming culture, from its iconic shore towns to its cosmopolitan cities. Asbury Park, in particular, has become a queer haven known for its artsy energy and oceanfront celebrations, while Cape May and Jersey City add classic coastal and urban romance.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: New Jersey delivers big-city convenience and beachside relaxation with total peace of mind. You can expect affirming hospitality, inclusive vendors, and statewide protections wherever you go — making it one of the easiest, safest, and most celebratory honeymoon choices in the U.S.

New Mexico: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

New Mexico shines as one of the most genuinely welcoming states in the Southwest. Its inclusive laws are matched by a creative, spiritual culture that celebrates individuality and love in all forms. LGBTQ+ honeymooners will find a relaxed, affirming atmosphere in every major destination—from Santa Fe’s art-meets-adobe romance to Albuquerque’s urban energy and Taos’s bohemian mountain charm.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: the entire state is affirming, though Santa Fe and Albuquerque lead for inclusive venues and vendors. Rural areas are friendly but quieter; couples can explore confidently knowing equality protections are strong and community support runs deep in the Land of Enchantment.

New York: 90/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

New York remains one of the most affirming states in the U.S., with strong legal protections, visible queer culture, and an inclusive tourism scene led by NYC and its surrounding metros. Pride and progress are embedded in the state’s identity, making it a top-tier pick for LGBTQ+ honeymoons.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: city destinations like NYC, Albany, and Buffalo are wonderfully inclusive, but attitudes can grow more conservative upstate. Stick to affirming hotels and vendors, and you’ll still find plenty of romance, community, and celebration wherever your trip takes you.

North Carolina: 51/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Caution / Elevated Risk

North Carolina’s LGBTQ+ experience is shaped by contrasts. Cities like Charlotte, Durham, and Asheville lead the South in inclusivity, hosting booming queer-owned wedding and hospitality industries, yet state-level protections remain absent and legislative hostility persists. The result is a mixed but evolving landscape that continues to improve at the local level even as the state lags federally.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: plan honeymoons around progressive metros—Charlotte for upscale luxury, Asheville for artsy mountain romance, or Durham for culture and cuisine. Rural areas can feel more conservative, so lean on verified inclusive vendors and venues to ensure your celebration feels safe and affirming.

North Dakota: 33/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (Lower Range)

North Dakota offers friendly individuals and welcoming pockets—particularly in Fargo and Grand Forks—but lacks nearly every formal protection for LGBTQ+ residents and visitors. Recent legislative actions targeting trans youth and gender expression, combined with minimal inclusive infrastructure, make the state one of the least secure options in the U.S. for LGBTQ+ honeymooners.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if visiting, stick to Fargo, which has a small but visible LGBTQ+ scene and affirming venues. Outside metro areas, visibility drops sharply, and inclusive accommodations are rare. For couples seeking open celebration or worry-free romance, North Dakota is best approached with caution or substituted for more affirming nearby states like Minnesota.

Ohio: 69/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution (Upper Range)

Ohio’s story is one of contrasts. The state’s big cities are highly affirming and home to some of the Midwest’s most vibrant LGBTQ+ communities — Columbus Pride is among the nation’s largest — but statewide protections remain limited, and conservative legislation continues to challenge progress, especially for trans individuals.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati are excellent, welcoming honeymoon hubs with affirming vendors, venues, and nightlife. Small towns and rural areas, however, can be hit or miss — focus your travel on cities or known inclusive spaces, and vet accommodations in advance.

Oklahoma: 35/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (Lower Range)

Oklahoma’s LGBTQ+ community continues to show strength and resilience in the face of an extremely conservative political environment. While Oklahoma City and Tulsa have supportive enclaves with Pride festivals, queer-owned businesses, and affirming wedding vendors, the rest of the state remains legally and socially hostile.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you plan to honeymoon in Oklahoma, stick to Oklahoma City or Tulsa, where inclusive hotels, venues, and cultural attractions (like OKC’s 39th Street District or Tulsa’s Equality Center) provide affirming spaces. Avoid rural travel unless you’ve confirmed LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations. For a nearby, safer alternative, consider Colorado or New Mexico, both of which offer inclusive hospitality with similar natural and cultural appeal.

Oregon: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Oregon sets the standard for inclusive travel in the Pacific Northwest. With full legal protections, progressive social values, and one of the nation’s most visibly queer cultures, it’s a destination where LGBTQ+ couples can truly relax and celebrate. From Portland’s creative wedding scene to Oregon wine country, the coast, and the Cascades, equality isn’t an afterthought—it’s the default.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: the entire state is affirming, though Portland, Eugene, and coastal towns like Cannon Beach lead the way with inclusive vendors and venues. Expect open celebration, top-tier hospitality, and a community that genuinely welcomes love in every form.

Pennsylvania: 76/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈 Good

Pennsylvania is a tale of two realities for LGBTQ+ couples: world-class inclusivity in cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, contrasted by rural regions with little visibility and no statewide legal protections. Still, the local protections covering most of the population, combined with strong affirming care and community vibrancy, make it one of the safer options in the Mid-Atlantic.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Philly is a premier LGBTQ+ travel city—romantic, historical, and filled with queer-owned businesses and venues. Pittsburgh offers artsy, industrial-chic charm, and both cities have thriving Pride events. For countryside or Amish-region getaways, vet vendors carefully; while most areas are welcoming, attitudes vary by community.

Rhode Island: 93/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Rhode Island is small but mighty when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusion. With comprehensive protections, progressive leadership, and a culture of openness that runs from Providence’s artsy queer scene to Newport’s Gilded Age romance, it’s one of the most effortless and elegant honeymoon destinations in the U.S.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: couples will find inclusive wedding venues and inns statewide, from chic seaside escapes in Newport to creative urban energy in Providence. Rhode Island’s welcoming spirit and coastal beauty make it an easy “yes” for newlyweds seeking both comfort and charm.

South Carolina: 46/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (Upper Range)

South Carolina’s charm, natural beauty, and luxury coastal venues make it an appealing honeymoon destination on paper, but for LGBTQ+ couples, its lack of protections and increasingly conservative legal environment make it risky outside progressive city enclaves. That said, Charleston and Columbia are genuine bright spots: both cities have thriving creative scenes, inclusive businesses, and a growing queer presence that quietly resists the broader state’s regressions.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Charleston is your best bet … a picture-perfect honeymoon city with inclusive wedding vendors, boutique inns, and coastal elegance. Columbia also offers an affirming community vibe. Avoid rural areas or smaller beach towns without explicit nondiscrimination policies. For a similar Southern-coastal feel with far greater safety, consider Georgia’s Atlanta–Savannah corridor or North Carolina’s Asheville.

South Dakota: 29/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (Lower Range)

South Dakota’s wide-open landscapes and famous landmarks (Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Black Hills) can make for beautiful trips—but LGBTQ+ honeymooners face a hostile statewide legal environment. Recent laws restrict trans rights and school speech, and there are no nondiscrimination protections. While locals are often courteous, visibility and resources for queer travelers are limited.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you plan a honeymoon here, base it in Sioux Falls or Rapid City, where affirming vendors, churches, and community groups exist. The Black Hills area offers scenic romance but virtually no formal protections, so book explicitly LGBTQ-friendly lodging and prepare thoughtfully. For a safer nearby alternative, consider Minnesota or Colorado, which both offer similar outdoor beauty with strong protections.

Tennessee: 38/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Tennessee delivers world-class music, food, and natural beauty—but for LGBTQ+ honeymooners, it’s a state of sharp contrasts. Urban centers like Nashville and Memphis are vibrant, creative, and inclusive, yet the broader legal climate is among the most hostile in the country. Extensive anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and restrictions on healthcare sharply lower its overall safety score despite strong community resilience.

What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: you’ll find affirming hotels, restaurants, and wedding vendors in major metros, but couples should be mindful of the state’s current policies and keep itineraries centered in welcoming urban areas. Rural or small-town stops may feel less open, so lean on verified inclusive spaces for a worry-free romantic escape.

Texas: 45/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Texas offers a study in contrasts: cosmopolitan cities like Austin, Dallas, and Houston rank among the most inclusive in the nation, while state-level politics remain some of the most hostile to LGBTQ+ rights. Urban centers provide outstanding hospitality, vibrant Pride scenes, and deep community networks, but the overall legal and political climate drags the state’s safety rating down.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you stick to major metros, you’ll find thriving queer nightlife, affirming hotels, and plenty of romance under the Lone Star sky. Outside those hubs, visibility drops sharply, and couples may encounter more conservative attitudes so plan itineraries thoughtfully and lean on the well-established LGBTQ+ businesses that anchor Texas’s big-city communities.

Utah: 73/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈 Caution (upper range)

Utah defies easy categorization. The state has carved out a rare middle ground: moderate legal protections balanced with conservative cultural norms. Salt Lake City, Park City, and Moab have become safe, inclusive havens for LGBTQ+ travelers, hosting Pride celebrations, affirming venues, and a thriving queer outdoor community. Still, state-level laws and rural social conservatism create an uneven landscape that keeps Utah below “Excellent” status.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to inclusive destinations like Salt Lake City, Park City, or Moab for breathtaking scenery and affirming hospitality. Rural regions and small religious towns may feel more traditional, but locals are often welcoming when approached with respect—Utah rewards mindful travelers who mix adventure with awareness.

Vermont: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Vermont is one of the most LGBTQ+ affirming states in America—progressive, peaceful, and picturesque. As one of the first states to legalize civil unions and later embrace marriage equality, it’s woven inclusivity into its cultural DNA. Couples can expect open acceptance, charming rural hospitality, and breathtaking backdrops for every kind of honeymoon, from cozy cabin getaways to upscale farm-to-table escapes.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: everywhere in Vermont feels safe and welcoming. Burlington and Stowe are favorites for luxury and culture, while Woodstock and Manchester offer romantic countryside vibes. Vermont’s community warmth and full legal equality make it the gold standard for rustic romance done right.

Virginia: 85/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈 Good

Virginia is an evolving, moderately progressive state that’s become increasingly LGBTQ+ friendly—especially in Northern Virginia, Richmond, and coastal cities like Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The 2020 Virginia Values Act created one of the strongest civil rights frameworks in the South, but recent attempts to erode local protections and school policies have added political tension.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to inclusive metros like Richmond, Alexandria, or Charlottesville, where queer-friendly venues, restaurants, and vendors thrive. The state’s mix of southern charm and progressive urban culture makes it a great “bridge” destination for couples seeking elegance, history, and inclusivity, with a small note of caution for rural travel.

Washington: 94/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent

Washington stands out as one of the safest and most affirming states for LGBTQ+ honeymooners. With comprehensive protections, proactive equality laws, and an inclusive culture that spans from Seattle’s vibrant urban core to small coastal and island towns, it offers both adventure and authenticity. The Pacific Northwest’s signature blend of natural beauty and progressive values shines here.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: Seattle, Tacoma, and the islands make exceptional bases for an inclusive, scenic honeymoon. Rural or mountain regions are generally friendly but quieter; couples will find statewide protections ensure a worry-free experience from the Puget Sound to the Cascades.

Washington D.C.: 98/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈🌈 Excellent (Top Tier)

Washington, D.C. is the national benchmark for LGBTQ+ inclusion. It boasts one of the country’s strongest legal frameworks for equality, outstanding affirming healthcare, and a vibrant queer culture woven into its civic identity. From the grandeur of the monuments to the intimate boutique hotels of Dupont Circle or The Yards, D.C. combines elegance, safety, and visibility in equal measure.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: every neighborhood welcomes you. Dupont Circle and Logan Circle remain the heart of queer nightlife; Adams Morgan and Shaw offer stylish stays and dining; Georgetown and The Wharf provide luxury riverside romance. Whether your honeymoon leans toward museum-hopping or rooftop-cocktail sunsets, D.C. is a place where equality isn’t an aspiration, it’s daily life.

West Virginia: 27/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk (Lower Range)

West Virginia’s breathtaking mountains and rustic charm make it visually perfect for a honeymoon, but legally and socially, it remains among the least protective states for LGBTQ+ couples. Recent anti-trans laws, lack of nondiscrimination protections, and a generally conservative culture mean couples should exercise significant caution, especially outside university towns.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: if you plan a honeymoon here, focus on Morgantown, Shepherdstown, or Charleston, where small affirming communities and Pride events exist. Rural and resort regions (like the New River Gorge) may be friendly on the surface but lack explicit inclusivity. For a safer Appalachian alternative, Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania offer similar scenery with far stronger protections.

Wisconsin: 77/100

Rating Band: 🌈🌈🌈 Good

Wisconsin offers a welcoming social atmosphere—especially in Madison, Milwaukee, and college towns—but falls short on full statewide legal protections, particularly for gender identity. Still, it’s one of the safer Midwest destinations thanks to strong local ordinances, visible Pride events, and inclusive hospitality in major metros.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: stick to progressive areas like Madison (a Pride-filled, artsy city), Milwaukee (urban culture and lakefront romance), or cozy Door County for small-town charm. Rural regions tend to be polite but less visibly inclusive, so a metro-anchored itinerary ensures a smooth, affirming experience.

Wyoming: 45/100

Rating Band: 🌈 Elevated Risk

Wyoming’s vast natural beauty and powerful LGBTQ+ history (as the home of Matthew Shepard’s legacy) make it both inspiring and complex. While cities like Laramie and Jackson Hole are inclusive and progressive, the state overall lacks legal protections and still faces social conservatism, especially in rural regions. The absence of statewide hate-crime laws protecting LGBTQ+ individuals remains a glaring gap.
What LGBTQ+ honeymooners should know: plan honeymoons around progressive enclaves like Jackson Hole or Laramie, where inclusive businesses and outdoor romance thrive against the dramatic backdrop of the Tetons. Beyond these hubs, LGBTQ+ visibility drops sharply, so research affirming lodging and venues before heading into Wyoming’s wilder frontiers.
